Being a student athlete is hard work as nothing comes easy. But between thick and thin, there is one man who will always work with you to attain your goals. I’ve been working with Avneet Brar for just over two years and he saw the potential in me from day one. Avneet saw me early in my high school years and invited me out to camps that gave me an opportunity to improve. When he became an Assistant Coach at Vancouver Island University, he was very keen on me attending their school to play for the VIU Mariners. Right out of high school I was shy, timid, and not ready to compete. Now I’m one of the most vocal guys on the court, I am willing to take a hit and ready to give 100% every game and practice. This was largely in thanks to Avneet (Av for short) for dragging me out to 7 AM morning skills session every morning. Av would drive me home from practice at night and then pick me up the next morning at 6:45AM for skill work at 7 AM. Av worked with me on my weaknesses and would try to perfect my strengths. Av has a certain way of teaching and properly explaining what to do and why to do it. We have spent a great deal of time working on my post fundamentals, understanding of the game and conversations on hard work and confidence. For that I am truly grateful for having him as a coach and look foward to continuing to better my skill set and contributions to the team.
